My Story
What do you see as the most pressing issue facing Calhoun County over the next four years, and what specific steps would you take as county judge to address it?
The greatest challenge facing Calhoun County is balancing a growing demand for services with a tax base that relies heavily on a few large industrial contributors. As county judge, I would prioritize responsible financial planning, diversification of the tax base, and strategic infrastructure investments, while ensuring transparency and accountability for all. I would also continue working closely with industry partners on infrastructure, emergency preparedness, and workforce initiatives so that growth benefits the entire community without placing an unfair burden on residents and small businesses.
County judges oversee budgeting and emergency management. How would you balance fiscal responsibility with preparing for hurricanes and other disasters?
Balancing financial responsibility with preparedness requires prioritizing county readiness, guided by the same disciplined planning I use in my business and at home. I have decades of experience making responsible financial decisions, avoiding overspending while ensuring that both my family and my business are prepared for unexpected challenges.
I believe preparing early for disasters allows for more responsible spending by reducing the need to purchase equipment, supplies, and resources in emergency situations. Too often, buying after the fact leads to rushed decisions and higher costs. By anticipating the needs of our residents and businesses, we can reduce both emotional and financial panic. Having endured major storms in my 55 years as a Calhoun County resident, I am confident in my ability to prepare our county as well as, if not better than, I prepare my own family.
What role should the county play in economic development, and how would you work with cities, industry, and residents to protect quality of life?
Calhoun County should play an active role in economic development by working alongside our cities to attract businesses and families who want to put down roots here, while continuing to support the small businesses that are the backbone of our local economy. As county judge, my focus would be creating an environment where new investment and locally owned businesses can succeed together.
The County can support this effort by ensuring county funded services and facilities are reliable and well maintained. This includes safe, properly maintained roads, community resources such as the library and museum, and clean, accessible parks and public spaces that enhance quality of life and make our communities attractive places to live and work.
Strong emergency services are also essential. The Sheriff’s Department, Fire Department, and EMS support residents, visitors, and businesses every day, and public safety is critical to economic stability and community confidence. Together, we succeed.
How would you describe your leadership style?
My leadership style is strong, fair, and thoughtful. While raising three children, I made it a priority to listen to their perspectives while never wavering from my core values or my sense of what was right. As a business owner with years of management experience, I have consistently applied that same leadership approach in my professional life. I believe effective leadership requires listening to every perspective to make informed decisions, while staying firmly grounded in guiding principles.
What does transparency in county government mean to you, and how would you ensure residents have access to timely and accurate information?
To me, transparency in county government means maintain accountability to the voters and honoring the trust they place in their elected officials. Residents should be able to clearly understand how county funds are being used, why those decisions are made, and how funds will be allocated in the future. They should also be informed about the steps the county is taking to remain prepared in the event of a disaster. To ensure residents receive timely and accurate information, I would ensure they know where public information is posted and when it is released, so they can stay informed and engaged in county government.
Why are you the most qualified candidate for this position?
As a lifelong Calhoun County resident, I have seen both the incredible resilience of our community and the challenges we have faced during times of disaster. As a father and business owner I have learned the importance of preparation, sound financial decision making, and long- term planning. By bringing together my deep commitment to Calhoun County with a practical and responsible approach to leadership, I believe I can help shape a successful future for our county.
